"In his brief appreciation of Pablo de Sarasate...Camille Saint-Saens emphasised the importance of this great Spanish virtuoso for his own violin works. Sarasate was only fifteen years old when he first visited Saint-Saens in 1859. He asked the compser for a violin concerto. 'Flatter and utterly enchanted, I promised to do so and kept my word with the Concerto in A Major. [...] Then I wrote the Rondo capriccioso in the Spanish style for him, and later the Concerto in b minor [...].
