Daugherty, Michael - Diamond in the Rough - Violin, Viola, and Percussion - Hendon Music Edition
Though it is a decidedly modern composition, Michael Daugherty's Diamond in the Rough is, in fact, all about Mozart - man and myth. As one of the most famous composers in history, his life was more than susceptible to becoming legendary. Each movement of this work for violin, viola, and percussion focuses on a different facet of this "gem" among composers: "Magic" is, of course, a nod to his opera "The Magic Flute," even incorporating the glockenspiel, which played an important part in the opera. The second movement, "Fifty-Five Minutes Past Midnight," refers to the time of night at which Mozart is said to have passed away. It evokes an eerie, chilly feeling, in part by means of crystal glasses filled with water, which the percussionist plays by rubbing the rims; this creates a sound reminiscent of the glass armonica, which Mozart was known to include in his compositions. Finally, the raucous "Wig Dance" is explained by the composer's reputation for partying heartily. This piece is a great choice for advanced players in search of something out of the ordinary!
This edition contains a score and parts for violin, viola, and percussion (the score is the percussion part). Published by Hendon Music (Boosey & Hawkes), distributed by Hal Leonard.
